BUSINESS PROVISION

From Year 9 students can opt to study a Business qualification. The qualification on offer is a BTEC First Extended Certificate in Business.

BTEC Firsts are QCF Level 2 qualifications designed to provide specialist work-related qualifications in a range of sectors. They give learners the knowledge, understanding and skills that they need to prepare for employment. The qualifications also provide career development opportunities for those already in work.

 

BTEC Firsts attract achievement and attainment points that equate to similar-sized general qualifications.

On successful completion of a BTEC First qualification, learners can progress to or within employment and/or continue their study in the same, or related vocational area.

 

The BTEC Firsts in Business offer teachers an opportunity to develop their own assignments/activities, to take into account the needs of both local employers and their learners.

 

The assessment approach of the BTEC Firsts in Business allows learners to receive feedback on their progress throughout the course as they provide evidence towards the grading criteria. Evidence for assessment may be generated through a range of diverse activities including assignment and project work, case studies, workplace assessment, role play and oral presentation.

 

Business employers value employees who are able to communicate effectively both verbally and using electronic communication methods. The BTEC Firsts in Business provide opportunities for learners to develop their communication skills as they progress through the course. This can be both through presentations and discussions in which they have the opportunity to express their opinions. Learners should be encouraged to take responsibility for their own learning and achievement.

 

The course consists of the following units studies over the course:

  • Business Purposes
  • Business Organisations
  • Customer Relations in Business
  • Business Enterprise

The course is 100% coursework with no external examination. On completion of the course, students with be graded as follows:

  • PASS – This is equivalent to 2 GCSE’s grade “C”
  • MERIT - This is equivalent to 2 GCSE’s grade “B”
  • DISTINCTION - This is equivalent to 2 GCSE’s grade “A”
  • DISTINCTION * - This is equivalent to 2 GCSE’s grade “A*”
