What is a Peer Mediator?
In school we have approx 50 pupils in Years 8, 9, 10 & 11 (girls & boys) who have been trained to conduct a mediation meeting. A mediation meeting is for any pupil who has dispute so they can talk to each other, face to face with a Peer Mediator to make sure the session is helpful and fair. This is to hopefully avoid arguments getting out of hand. Each person talks uninterrupted so each side of the dispute is heard. After the problem is outlined, solutions are suggested and an agreement about a way forward is reached, with everyone’s agreement. If no solution can be agreed the P.M may seek help from a teacher or other adult.
P.M’s all wear a blue P.M. badge and/or a blue wrist band with “End Bullying” on it and a FPHS tie with a blue stripe on it.
Rules for Mediation
Mediation is a process that students choose.
Everything said during mediation is kept CONFIDENTIAL, what is said in the room stays in the room.
In mediation, students take turns talking and no one can interrupt.
The Peer Mediator does not take sides
Quote from two Peer Mediators;
“I think that Peer Mediation makes you feel you are putting something back into the school community and it’s good to know that you can help those around you”
By Suzanne Booth 11N & Bryony Makin 11F
How do I become a Peer Mediator?
Am I suitable?
↓
Talk to a P.M.
↓
Can you get at least two people to agree that you are suitable?
(e.g. teachers? P.M’s? pupils? support staff? parents? etc.)
↓
See Mrs Biddulph, give her your name & tutor group
↓
Be prepared for an informal interview with some P.M.’s to see if you are suitable to join the team
↓
Mrs Biddulph and the PM’s then decide if you are suitable for the team. REMEMBER we need a balance of boys/girls and we only select 10/12 pupils from any one year group. So if you do not get selected you have not failed. Try again?
↓
Mrs B. will organise a training day during the summer term and you need to attend
↓
If successful you will become a P.M. Well done!
