EAL Support

The EAL faculty provides specialist teachers to teach in partnership with other subject teachers to develop the language skills of pupils who speak languages other than English at home.

We:
Help to ensure that all bilingual pupils, whether they are new to English or have been in the school system for sometime, develop the skills in academic English that they need to succeed in secondary school.
Provide language development opportunities for pupils as part of the curriculum - language through learning and language for learning. Pupils are not withdrawn from any lessons so they do not miss any part of their curriculum entitlement and do not fall behind. Research shows that the curriculum is the best place for learning English.
Recognise that bilingualism is an asset to the development of language, learning and thinking skills.
Provide high quality, personalised resources for pupils to use that enable them to develop their language and thinking skills.
Assess pupils' language development and learning in order to ensure that the appropriate teaching and learning strategies are used and to monitor pupil progress.
Provide advice and support on a range of issues related to bilingual learners.
We run a homework club which takes place from 1.20 - 1.45 every Tuesday -  Friday. There are a number of teachers in our Faculty who speak languages other than English - Mirpuri, Bengali, Urdu, Farsi and Spanish for example.

We can also get interpreters for other languages so please do noit hesitate to contact us if you have any worries.
