Compelling Learning in Dance
In line with the school’s vision of compelling learning, dance gives the pupils the opportunities to work collectively and collaboratively with a shared focus. Pupils are encouraged to think ‘outside the box’ and be creative, solving problems in a variety of ways. Dance is a physical activity in which pupils are challenged and will gain the knowledge to choreograph pieces, perform and appreciate dance in the wider context. The subject offers pupils the chance to actively engage with themes and issues as well as finer techniques and choreographic elements. Group discussion and articulation of vocabulary is encouraged and an enthusiasm of the subject through participation is gained.
There are plenty of opportunities for pupils to consider a range of dance styles and genres from different cultures including Contemporary British and American artists. The compelling delivery of the dance curriculum at Key Stage 3 is intended to provide learners with a growing enthusiasm, sound skill base and strong subject knowledge to move forward onto Key Stage 4 and beyond. The subject promotes independence, confidence and deeper levels of self-reflection and students become experts using an ever growing repertoire of subject specific vocabulary.
Dance has strong networks and links within the borough and beyond and pupils will gain opportunities to work with professional companies and initiatives outside of the curriculum classroom. Such as Dance Manchester, Company Chameleon and The English National Ballet.
