Tuesday 21st March saw parents and pupils from Year 7 & 8 get involved in the second FPHS STEAM event of the year. STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Maths.
The theme for this event was code breaking and the first challenge put everyone’s detective skills to the test with a murder mystery challenge. Parents and pupils were working together to solves the clues to find the murderer.
The group was then introduced to the world of morse code. They were first introduced to the BBC Microbit computers. These small computers were coded by the teams to create their own morse code machine. They were then set a challenge of sending secret messages to other teams.
Once everyone was a morse code expert they then chose an inspirational quote and physically wrote their message in dots and dashes onto a wooden board. The board was then vacuum packed and the resulting mold filled with cement. Luckily no-one, except Mr Walker and Mr Cloran, got too messy. When they have dried, the inspirational morse code tiles will be on display soon!
Parents and pupils had an excellent time with a number of parents commenting on the enjoyable positive experience they had in school.
Mr Cloran (Technology), Mrs Taylor (Maths), Mr Miah(Science), Mr Walker(Art) and Mr Hodgson(Computing) will be working on another STEAM event in the Summer term.
We are hope to see you there.
