Personal Development is at the heart of this purpose and permeates all aspects of school life. We aim to ensure all pupils have a curriculum and opportunities that help them to aspire, thrive and achieve. We do this through our taught curriculum as well as a wide, rich set of experiences and opportunities, so that pupils can develop their talents and interests whilst building their confidence and resilience.
We believe that developing personal skills as well as achieving academically will ensure that all learners believe in themselves and their future, have choices and the power to make them and are able to contribute positively to society.
Personal Development: Discreet curriculum
Citizenship lessons are part of every child’s curriculum from years 7- 11 and an opportunity to develop and deepens pupils’ understanding of the fundamental British values of democracy, individual liberty, the rule of law, and mutual respect and tolerance. The Thrive (PSHE) curriculum provides pupils with learning for life and is constantly adapted in response to upcoming issues and pupil voice. We also have our Tutor time “Engage” sessions, which is our bespoke Human rights programme and an opportunity to learn tier 2 vocabulary attached to this
Through all of these programmes, we encourage skills of critical thinking, provide a safe space for dialogue and give pupils a voice so that they can engage in difficult conversations, challenge misconceptions and become advocates for those who can’t speak for themselves. We focus on developing a rounded and deep understanding of Human Rights, so that they can become a lived experience for all.
Assemblies are carefully planned to support all aspects of school and personal life
Personal Development Careers
Our Careers programme runs through our Thrive lessons with bespoke activities for each year group. Pupils in year 10 Year engage in a week of Work Experience and have a mock interview with employers from around Greater Manchester
Personal Development: Extra Curricular experiences
The personal development experiences we share as Falinge Family are far ranging and provide opportunities for pupils to extend their spiritual, moral and social understanding along side discovering and developing their talents
A large factor that equips and enables these opportunities is our close partnership work with a number of local charities and 3rd party sector organisations; Petrus Homeless charity, Caring and Sharing, Rochdale Women’s Welfare Association, Health Watch, Army of Kindness.
We also have the support of Creative partners such as The Comino Foundation, Ergon Theatre, Curios Minds, The Lowry, M6 Theatre, Theatre in Flow, Touchstones and Skylight circus and faith partners; The Council of Mosques and Nelson Street church
We work closely with RFK Human Rights Foundation UK and we are an OCL Holocaust Beacon school to ensure that we are up to date with current thinking and pedagogy on teaching these important areas of our curriculum..
