Design & Technology

Intent

Design & Technology at Falinge Park gives pupils the opportunity to turn ideas into real, three-dimensional outcomes. Through designing, modelling and making, pupils develop practical skills alongside creative and analytical thinking. Learning in D&T is hands-on, purposeful and engaging, allowing pupils to thrive as they experience the satisfaction of creating high-quality products while developing the knowledge that underpins their work.

All projects combine practical construction with a strong theoretical foundation. Pupils learn to design by hand and through the use of Computer Aided Design (CAD), developing the technical precision and problem-solving skills needed in modern manufacturing and engineering. Within this environment, pupils are encouraged to aspire to produce their very best work and achieve outcomes they can be proud of.

We aim to provide a well-ordered, safe and stimulating learning environment where pupils feel supported, confident and willing to take calculated risks as they learn from the making process.

Curriculum

Key Stage 3

At Key Stage 3, pupils experience a broad range of materials, tools and technologies through a rotational programme.

  • Year 7 pupils work with acrylic materials and undertake a textiles project, developing accuracy, creativity and an introduction to CAD/CAM and manufacturing processes.
  • Year 8 pupils explore simple electronic circuits alongside a further textiles project, learning about systems, control and the properties of different materials.
  • Year 9 pupils focus on working with wood and metal, developing higher-level practical skills, precision and an understanding of material properties and manufacturing techniques.

Across all years, pupils develop their ability to:

  • design thoughtfully in response to problems
  • work safely and independently
  • use specialist tools and equipment
  • evaluate and improve their work
  • understand how products are designed and made in the real world

This broad experience allows pupils to aspire to take their skills further and make informed choices when selecting their GCSE options.

KS4 GCSE 9-1 Design & Technology

At GCSE, pupils build on their practical skills and knowledge to design and manufacture products in response to real contexts. The course consists of a 50% coursework project and a 50% examination.

Students develop a deeper understanding of:

  • design processes
  • materials and their properties
  • manufacturing methods including CAD/CAM
  • social, cultural, environmental and economic influences on design
  • Develop confidence with a range of tools to produce a working prototype

Pupils are encouraged to work creatively, independently and with resilience as they develop solutions to real design problems. They aspire to refine their ideas, thrive through the practical challenges of making, and achieve high-quality outcomes. The subject supports progression into a wide range of careers including engineering, architecture, product design, construction, manufacturing, graphics and many others.

Learning Beyond the Practical

Design & Technology at Falinge Park makes clear links to Mathematics and Science. Pupils regularly apply measuring skills, accuracy, scale, material properties, forces and electronic principles within their practical work.

Sustainability and environmental responsibility are key themes within the curriculum. Pupils consider the impact that products have on the world around them, including the sourcing of materials, energy use in manufacturing, product life cycles and the importance of reducing waste. They are encouraged to think critically about how thoughtful design can reduce environmental harm and contribute positively to society.

D&T also encourages pupils to reflect on the wider social and cultural impact of design. They consider how products affect people and communities across the world and develop an appreciation of responsible, ethical design.

Our Learning Environment

The D&T department is a calm, purposeful and well-organised space where pupils can thrive both independently and collaboratively. High expectations, clear routines and a focus on quality ensure that every pupil is supported to achieve and take pride in what they create.

Pupils develop transferable skills that support learning across the curriculum and prepare them for life beyond school: problem solving, resilience, creativity, teamwork and independence.

Cultural and Creative Development

D&T education encourages imagination, curiosity and innovation. Pupils are inspired to develop ideas, reflect on their own work and learn from the work of others. Through exploring materials, processes and design from a range of cultures and contexts, pupils gain an appreciation of human creativity and technological achievement while understanding the environmental responsibilities that come with it.
