The ‘Sowing Sounds’ Project at Falinge Park High School
Our ‘Sowing Sounds’ Neighbourhood Commission Project is the proud culmination of over two years of work between Falinge Park High School, Rochdale and our local and regional cultural organisations.
As part of a long term project with BeeWell and Curious Minds, Falinge Park High School has worked with Ergon Theatre Company and Petrus, Rochdale to create eight original audio recordings for our developing Arts, Words and Wellbeing Garden.
The eight new audio recordings explore themes of wellbeing, environment, sustainability and personal experience. The pieces highlight our current complex relationship with our landscape and the wider context of our planet.

Ergon Theatre Company is one of the UK’s leading Climate Theatre Companies with a mission to ‘Entertain, Educate and Empower’. The company specialises in performance-based work about the climate crisis and all our futures, using art as a communicating bridge between the scientific and academic community and the wider public.
Students involved in the project were drawn from Years 7 to 10 as part of our well-established and national award-winning Nature Group and a group of Year 10 Creative Health Youth Champions. The young people worked with professional actors and facilitators from a range of organisations.
The audio pieces were created over a series of three days using a carefully constructed process to encourage idea generation and research, script and concept development through to the final audio recordings and sound design of the artworks.
Students were involved in every stage of the process from planning the neighbourhood commission to supporting workshop design and delivery through to creating the final pieces. Our Creative Health Youth Champions have provided peer to peer support and leadership throughout the project experience for others.
Participants explained…
“I learnt to work with new people.”
“I learnt about different parts of the world.”
“I learnt how to lead and support people in groups.”
“I learnt how useful nature is.”
“I learnt how to be happy.”
Each of the audio recordings will be available to listen to in our developing Arts, Words and Wellbeing Garden through a specially installed piece of outdoor equipment. We hope you can enjoy them outdoors on a sunny day in our developing garden at our school. With the support of Curious Minds the project was funded by Arts Council England.
